It is the end of September, the removal is in two days, the handover the day after – and the flat still looks lived in. You are not alone: around the common Swiss moving dates, we receive many messages from people who simply ran out of time. Last minute move out cleaning is stressful, but it is manageable if you stop trying to do everything at once and focus on what the property management will actually check.

Here are five steps to get from chaos to a calm handover.

Why time runs out before a handover

Moving in Switzerland often means several deadlines at once: notice periods, the removal company, the new flat, work, children, registering with the commune. The cleaning is usually planned last and underestimated most.

A thorough move-out clean covers far more than regular cleaning. Landlords expect windows inside and outside including frames, shutters and blinds, clean appliances, no grease in the extractor hood and no limescale in bathroom and WC – as the homeowners' association HEV describes the typical handover requirements. Even for a small flat, that is a long day's work.

1. Take stock – honestly

Before you start scrubbing, take 20 minutes to plan. Write down:

  • Time: How many hours can you realistically clean before the handover, after the removal?
  • People: Who can help, and when?
  • State of the flat: How dirty are the oven, bathroom, windows and blinds?
  • Extras: Cellar, attic compartment, balcony, garage – are they empty?
  • Disposal: What still needs to go to the recycling centre or bulky waste collection?

If the numbers do not add up, that is your answer: you need help. It is far easier to get a cleaning team two or three days ahead than on the evening before.

2. Separate removal and cleaning

Cleaning around boxes and furniture takes much longer and the results are worse.

  • Pack and move everything out first, including the cellar and balcony.
  • Keep one small box with cleaning products, cloths, rubbish bags, a step ladder and a bucket.
  • If the removal and handover are on consecutive days, clean in the evening after the removal and finish the next morning.
  • Never plan to clean on the same morning as the handover – there are always surprises.

3. Prioritise what gets checked

With little time, perfection everywhere is not realistic. Focus on the areas that property managers check most closely and that most often lead to objections:

PriorityAreaWhy
HighOven, hob, extractor hood, fridgeChecked at almost every handover
HighBathroom and WC, limescaleClearly visible, often objected to
HighWindows, frames, blindsTime-consuming, noticed immediately
MediumCupboards inside, doors, switchesQuick to do, but often forgotten
MediumFloors, skirting boards, radiatorsLast step once everything else is done
Don't forgetCellar, balcony, letterboxPart of the flat, checked too

Work from top to bottom and from the back of the flat towards the front door, so you do not walk through clean rooms again.

4. Organise help – the right way

There are three realistic options when time is short:

Friends and family: Give everyone a clear task and area – one person does the kitchen, one the bathroom, one the windows. Unclear tasks create chaos.

A cleaning company at short notice: Send photos of each room and state the handover date and time. Ask whether the team attends the handover and re-cleans if something is objected to.

A combination: You do the ancillary rooms, disposal and small tasks; professionals do the kitchen, bathroom, windows and blinds.

5. Prepare the handover itself

While the cleaning is under way, prepare the paperwork:

  • Collect all keys and count them against the lease.
  • Photograph each room once it is clean, plus the meter readings.
  • Have the move-in protocol at hand if you have it.

At the handover, read the protocol carefully. The tenants' association points out that you are not obliged to sign a protocol you disagree with. Our guide to the last day before the apartment handover has a detailed checklist.

Common mistakes in last minute move out cleaning

  • Starting with the easy rooms: The kitchen and bathroom always take longer than expected – start there.
  • Cleaning while still packing: Double the time, half the result.
  • Booking help too late: On the evening before a peak moving date, most teams are fully booked.
  • Skipping the blinds: They are checked, and cleaning them properly takes time.
  • Signing the protocol in a rush: Read it first, even if you are exhausted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a move out cleaning at short notice?

Often yes, especially if you get in touch a few days before the handover. Around the end of March and end of September availability is tighter, so contact companies as early as possible and send photos for a quick quote.

What should I clean first if I only have one day?

Start with the kitchen appliances and the bathroom, then windows, frames and blinds. Floors come last. Soak oven trays and filters first so they are ready when you need them.

What happens if the flat is not clean enough at the handover?

The property management records it in the handover protocol and may ask for a re-clean or charge the cost of cleaning. A cleaning company with a handover guarantee re-cleans at no extra cost if cleaning points are objected to.

How long does move out cleaning take?

It depends on the size and condition of the flat. Even a well-kept small flat often takes a full day for one person, and larger or heavily used flats considerably longer.
