Stainless steel looks elegant in a modern kitchen – until the first fingerprints appear on the fridge door, water spots dry in the sink and the extractor hood gets a greasy film. Many Swiss rental kitchens have stainless steel sinks and worktops, and at the handover inspection with the property management, streaky steel is often one of the first things people notice. To clean stainless steel without streaks, you don't need special sprays – but you do need the right technique.

These five tricks work on sinks, hobs, extractor hoods, fridge fronts and dishwasher doors.

Why stainless steel shows every mark

Most kitchen stainless steel has a brushed finish: very fine parallel lines that give the surface its matt shine. Grease from fingers, water with dissolved minerals and cleaning product residue settle in these lines and catch the light – that's what you see as streaks.

Stainless steel is robust, but it isn't indestructible. Scouring powder and steel wool scratch the surface, and chlorine-based products can cause spots and corrosion. The gentle approach is not only safer – it's also more effective.

1. Find the grain and wipe along it

Look closely at the surface: you'll see fine lines running either horizontally or vertically. Always wipe in this direction.

  • Wiping across the grain pushes dirt into the lines and leaves visible arcs.
  • Circular movements create a hazy, smeared look.
  • Use long, straight strokes from one end to the other.

This one change often makes the biggest difference, even with exactly the same cloth and cleaner.

2. Microfibre and mild soapy water for everyday cleaning

For fingerprints, splashes and light grease, you need nothing more than water and a drop of washing-up liquid.

  1. Mix warm water with a small drop of washing-up liquid.
  2. Wipe the surface along the grain with a well-wrung microfibre cloth.
  3. Wipe again with a second cloth dampened with clear water to remove soap residue.
  4. Dry immediately with a dry microfibre or lint-free tea towel.

The Swiss consumer protection foundation also recommends a few simple remedies and the right cleaning cloths rather than a special product for every surface.

3. A drop of oil to polish and repel fingerprints

Once the surface is clean and dry, a very thin layer of oil gives stainless steel an even sheen and makes fingerprints less visible.

  1. Put a few drops of neutral cooking oil (such as sunflower or rapeseed oil) or baby oil on a soft, dry cloth – not directly on the steel.
  2. Rub it in thinly along the grain.
  3. Buff with a clean, dry part of the cloth until no greasy film remains.

Less is more: too much oil attracts dust and creates exactly the smeary look you want to avoid. Don't use oil on hob surfaces that get hot.

4. Clean a stainless steel sink: water spots and limescale

The sink is exposed to hard water many times a day, so white spots and a dull film are common.

  • Daily: Rinse, wipe with a sponge and dry with a tea towel.
  • Limescale spots: Dab with diluted vinegar or citric acid solution, leave for a few minutes, rinse thoroughly and dry. Don't leave acids on the steel for long.
  • Greyish film or light stains: A paste of baking soda and water, applied with a soft sponge along the grain, then rinsed off.
  • Drain and overflow: Clean with an old toothbrush.

5. Extractor hood, hob and fridge front

Each appliance has its own type of dirt:

Gas hob or hob surroundBurnt-on splashesSoak with a warm, wet cloth, then soft sponge

For the inside of the fridge, see our guide on how to clean a fridge. Some fridge fronts are made of stainless-steel-look plastic or have a fingerprint-resistant coating – check the manual and avoid oil and abrasives on those.

Common mistakes when cleaning stainless steel

  • Wiping in circles: Creates a hazy, smeared finish.
  • Letting it air-dry: Water leaves limescale spots.
  • Too much product: Residue attracts dirt and looks streaky.
  • Scouring pads: Scratches are permanent.
  • Glass cleaner with ammonia or alcohol on coated fronts: Can damage special coatings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean stainless steel without streaks?

Wipe along the grain with a damp microfibre cloth and warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, then wipe with clear water and dry immediately with a second cloth. A very thin layer of oil adds shine.

Can I clean stainless steel with vinegar?

Diluted vinegar helps with limescale spots in the sink, but rinse and dry it quickly and don't leave it on for long. Never use it together with chlorine-based products.

How do I get fingerprints off a stainless steel fridge?

Clean with a damp microfibre cloth along the grain, dry it and polish with a tiny amount of oil on a cloth. Check the manual first, as some fronts have a special coating that shouldn't be oiled.

What should I not use on stainless steel?

Avoid steel wool, scouring powder, abrasive sponges and chlorine or bleach-based cleaners. They scratch the surface or can cause stains and corrosion.
