If you share your home with a dog, you know the feeling: you have just vacuumed, and the sofa is already covered in hair again. In autumn, many dogs change from their summer to their winter coat, and the amount of hair increases noticeably. To remove dog hair efficiently, you do not need expensive gadgets – a few household items and the right technique work surprisingly well.

Here are five tricks for sofas, carpets, clothes and car seats, plus how to keep the hair under control during the moult.

Why there is more dog hair in autumn

Many dog breeds moult twice a year, in spring and autumn, as they adapt their coat to the season. Dogs with a dense undercoat, such as many shepherd, retriever and husky types, shed particularly heavily. Indoor dogs in heated homes may also shed more evenly throughout the year.

Dog hair clings to fabrics through static and small barbs on the hair itself, which is why a normal vacuum nozzle often only removes part of it.

1. The rubber glove trick for sofas and upholstery

This is the simplest and most effective trick for fabric upholstery.

  1. Put on a household rubber glove.
  2. Dampen it slightly under the tap and shake off excess water.
  3. Stroke over the upholstery in one direction with light pressure.
  4. The hair rolls into clumps that you can pick up easily.
  5. Rinse the glove and repeat, then vacuum the remaining hair.

Always test on a hidden spot first, especially on velvet, microfibre or delicate fabrics – and use very little water. Our guide on how to clean a sofa explains how to care for different materials.

2. The window squeegee for carpets and rugs

Dog hair gets trapped deep in carpet fibres. A rubber window squeegee brings it to the surface.

  1. Pull the squeegee over the carpet towards you in short strokes.
  2. The rubber blade gathers the hair into strips.
  3. Pick up the hair by hand or with the vacuum.
  4. Finish by vacuuming the whole carpet.

Rubber brooms work on the same principle and are practical for larger carpets and hard floors.

3. Vacuum cleaner: the right nozzle and filter

A vacuum cleaner remains the most important tool for daily hair removal.

  • Turbo brush or pet nozzle: A rotating brush loosens hair from carpets and upholstery.
  • Upholstery nozzle: For sofas, cushions and car seats.
  • Crevice tool: For seams, edges and skirting boards.
  • Fine filter: If someone in the household has allergies, a vacuum with a HEPA filter helps retain fine particles – aha! Swiss Allergy Centre recommends HEPA vacuum cleaners and damp wiping as part of dust control in the home.
  • Maintenance: Remove wrapped hair from the brush roller regularly and empty the container or change the bag in good time.

During heavy moulting, vacuuming hard floors every day or two keeps hair from gathering in corners and under furniture.

4. Lint roller and tape for clothes

For clothes, especially dark fabrics, a lint roller is the quickest solution right before you go out.

  • Roll in one direction with light pressure.
  • Wide packing tape wrapped around your hand, sticky side out, works in an emergency.
  • A slightly damp microfibre cloth or sponge also works on many fabrics.
  • For wool and delicate knits, use a soft clothes brush instead of sticky tape, which can pull fibres.

5. Washing machine: remove hair before and after

Putting hairy blankets or clothes straight into the washing machine often spreads the hair onto everything else – and into the machine.

  1. Before washing: Shake out textiles outdoors, vacuum dog blankets and use the lint roller on clothes.
  2. Tumble dryer first: If you have access to a dryer, a short cool or low-heat cycle before washing loosens hair, which collects in the lint filter.
  3. Wash: Do not overload the drum so hair can rinse away. Low-temperature programmes are fine for most items – EnergieSchweiz recommends eco programmes and full, but not overfilled, loads.
  4. After washing: Wipe the drum and door seal with a damp cloth and clean the lint and drain filters.

Keeping dog hair under control

The best way to deal with hair is to catch it before it lands on your furniture.

  • Brush your dog regularly, ideally outside or on the balcony, and more often during the moult.
  • Washable throws on the sofa and your dog's favourite spots can be shaken out and washed.
  • A fixed dog bed with a washable cover keeps the hair in one place.
  • A doormat and towel at the entrance reduce hair and dirt after walks.
  • A healthy coat sheds less: if your dog suddenly loses a lot of hair outside the normal moult, ask your vet.

Common mistakes

  • Washing hairy textiles without pre-cleaning: Hair ends up on other laundry and blocks the filter.
  • Using too much water on upholstery: Leaves water marks and damp padding.
  • Forgetting the vacuum brush roller: Wrapped hair reduces its effect.
  • Brushing the dog indoors: The hair floats straight onto the sofa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to remove dog hair from a couch?

Stroke over the fabric with a slightly damp rubber glove. The hair rolls into clumps you can pick up, and you can vacuum the rest with the upholstery nozzle. Test on a hidden spot first.

How do I remove dog hair from clothes in the washing machine?

Remove as much hair as possible beforehand with a lint roller or by shaking the clothes out. A short tumble dryer cycle before washing helps loosen hair. Clean the drum and filters afterwards.

How do I get dog hair out of a carpet?

Use a rubber window squeegee or rubber broom in short strokes to gather the hair, then vacuum with a turbo brush or pet nozzle.

Why is my dog shedding so much in autumn?

Many dogs moult in spring and autumn to change their coat for the season. Regular brushing helps. If hair loss seems unusual or your dog's skin changes, consult your vet.
