It feels like suede, but Alcantara is a microfibre suede made from synthetic fibres. You find it on sofas and armchairs, car seats and steering wheels. To clean Alcantara you mainly need very little water, a soft brush and patience: the material forgives a lot, but not hard scrubbing or soaking.

The good news: for most dirt a vacuum cleaner, a microfibre cloth and a little mild soap are enough. These five steps show how to care gently for your sofa, car seat and steering wheel, and how to lift the pile again afterwards.

Why Alcantara needs special care

Alcantara is a brand name for a microfibre suede made of polyester and polyurethane. Similar materials are sold under other names and are usually cared for in the same way. The surface consists of extremely fine, densely packed fibres. That is what makes it so soft – and so sensitive to the wrong treatment.

Typical problems nearly always appear in the same places:

  • Shiny, greasy patches: skin oil, sweat and hand cream glue the fibres together, especially on the steering wheel, gear knob, armrests and headrests.
  • Water rings: treat a stain with lots of water and you push the dirt outwards. As it dries, a light or dark edge is left behind.
  • Flattened pile: sitting and rubbing flatten the fibres, so the surface looks patchy even when it is clean.
  • Crumbs and dust: they settle between the fibres and act like very fine sandpaper.

Underneath the cover there is often foam and adhesive, so soaking it can do more harm than the stain itself. Always check the care instructions from the furniture or vehicle manufacturer first.

1. Vacuum and dry-brush regularly

The most important care step is also the least exciting: vacuum your sofa and seats every one to two weeks with the upholstery nozzle or a brush attachment, on low suction and in the direction of the pile. Then brush the surface lightly with a soft clothes or suede brush.

The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health points out that for a healthy home, regular dusting and damp wiping matter more than especially strong cleaning products. The same goes for upholstery: the more often you vacuum, the less often you need to clean with water.

2. Blot fresh stains straight away

Coffee, wine or juice on the cover? Every minute counts. Soak up the liquid with a light-coloured absorbent cloth or kitchen roll – blot, don't rub. Lift off solid residue such as chocolate or food with the back of a spoon first.

Then dampen a clean microfibre cloth with lukewarm water and wring it out well. Dab the stain from the outside in so that it does not spread.

Type of dirtWhat to do
Dust, crumbs, pet hairVacuum with the upholstery nozzle, dry-brush
Coffee, juice, water marksBlot straight away, then a barely damp cloth with lukewarm water
Shiny patches, skin oilMild soap solution, then wipe with clean water
Dried-in stainsDab several times with soapy water, let dry, repeat
Ballpoint pen, make-up, oilDon't experiment – check the manufacturer's advice or ask a specialist

3. Treat greasy patches with mild soap

For skin oil and everyday grime, a mild soap solution is usually enough: a few drops of neutral liquid soap or a little dissolved curd soap in lukewarm water. The Swiss consumer protection foundation Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz shows that a few simple products such as curd soap, plus the right tools, cover much of the household cleaning. Scouring powders and harsh stain removers have no place on Alcantara.

Here is how to proceed:

  1. Dip the microfibre cloth in the soap solution and wring it out firmly – it should only be damp.
  2. Dab the area or wipe in small circles with light pressure, without scrubbing.
  3. Go over it with a second cloth and clean water so that no soap is left behind; otherwise the spot will attract new dirt.
  4. Treat the whole seat or cushion evenly up to the seam, so that no ring forms.
  5. Let it air-dry – no hair dryer or fan heater.

Always test the solution on a hidden spot first, such as the back or underneath a cushion.

4. How to clean Alcantara car seats and steering wheels

The same rules apply in the car; there is just less space and the material works harder. Vacuum the seats with a narrow brush nozzle, including the seams. For stains, use the well-wrung cloth with soap solution again.

The steering wheel is the trickiest spot: hands constantly leave skin oil and sweat behind, and the fibres stick together and shine. Wipe it regularly with a damp microfibre cloth, using a little soapy water on shiny areas, then brush it once it is dry. Near the airbag cover and electronics, never spray anything – work only with the cloth. For other suede-look covers, see also our guide to suede and velour.

5. Lift the pile and let it dry

After every damp clean, the pile lies flat and looks uneven. Let the surface dry completely and air the room. Then brush lightly against the grain with a soft brush, and afterwards in the direction of the pile. The fibres stand up again and the surface regains its even look.

Some removable covers can go in the washing machine. Whether they can, and at what temperature, is shown on the care label. If there is no label, do not machine-wash the cover – clean it on the furniture instead.

Clean Alcantara: what you need

The most common mistakes

  • Too much water: soaked patches leave water rings and can damage the foam and adhesive underneath.
  • Rubbing and scrubbing: this roughens the fibres and spreads the stain. Blot patiently instead.
  • Using leather care: Alcantara is not leather, and greasy conditioners clog the pile.
  • Drying with heat: a hair dryer or fan heater can distort the fibres and encourage rings.
  • Leaving soap behind: without a final wipe with clean water, the area gets dirty again faster.

Frequently asked questions

Can you clean Alcantara with water?

Yes, but only barely damp. Use a well-wrung microfibre cloth and blot rather than rub. Soaking the fabric causes water rings and can damage the padding underneath.

How do I clean a shiny Alcantara steering wheel?

With a damp microfibre cloth and a little mild soap solution, then a wipe with clean water and a brush once dry. Wiping it regularly stops skin oil from building up.

Can Alcantara covers go in the washing machine?

Some removable covers can, others cannot. The care label is what counts. If there isn't one, clean the cover on the furniture.

How do I make Alcantara soft again?

Once it is dry, brush it with a soft brush against the grain and then in the direction of the pile. The fibres lift and the surface becomes evenly soft again.
