Friends are coming for dinner, the in-laws have announced a visit, or you simply want your weekend back. Knowing how to clean an apartment fast is less about scrubbing harder and more about working in the right order with the right kit. When our teams clean a 3.5-room flat, they do not wander from room to room picking things up – they follow a system. Here is that system, adapted for anyone with an hour and a bit of motivation.

Why a system beats motivation

When people ask us how they can speed up, the answer is usually the same. Most people lose time in three ways – fetching things, cleaning the same surface twice and getting stuck on details. Dust that falls from a shelf onto a freshly mopped floor means doing the floor again. A spray bottle left in the kitchen means a walk back from the bathroom.

Professional cleaners think in sequences. The goal of a quick clean is not perfection in every corner, but a visibly clean, fresh-smelling apartment where the surfaces you see and touch every day are spotless. Deep jobs such as the oven or windows belong in a separate session.

1. Pack one cleaning caddy before you start

A caddy or bucket with a handle turns your cleaning into a single loop. Before the timer starts, put everything you need into it:

  • 4–6 microfibre cloths in two colours (one colour for the bathroom and toilet, one for everything else)
  • An all-purpose cleaner and a bathroom or limescale cleaner
  • A glass cloth or a small squeegee
  • A toilet brush cleaner, a sponge and a small brush for corners
  • Rubbish bags and gloves

Keep products in their original packaging and read the labels. The federal information platform on chemicals recommends storing household products out of children's reach – a caddy you put away on a high shelf afterwards makes that easy.

2. Clear, air and pre-soak first

Spend the first ten minutes on preparation, not cleaning:

  1. Open the windows wide for a few minutes. Short, full airing is more effective than a window left tilted, as the FOPH explains.
  2. Walk through the apartment with a laundry basket and a rubbish bag. Everything that does not belong in a room goes in the basket; rubbish goes in the bag.
  3. Spray the toilet, washbasin, shower and hob with the right cleaner and let it work.
  4. Load the dishwasher or put dirty dishes to soak.

This is the step that makes cleaning your apartment fast possible: while the products loosen limescale and grease, you are already dusting elsewhere. If the shower has stubborn deposits, our guide on removing limescale in the shower goes into detail.

3. How to clean an apartment fast: top to bottom, back to front

Gravity is either your helper or your enemy. Always dust high surfaces first, then wipe middle-height surfaces and finish with the floor. And start in the room furthest from the front door, so you never walk over areas you have already cleaned.

ZoneSuggested timeFocus
Bedroom(s)10 minutesMake beds, dust surfaces, bedside tables
Living room10 minutesDust shelves and TV unit, wipe table, plump cushions
Bathroom and WC15 minutesRinse pre-soaked areas, mirror, taps, toilet
Kitchen15 minutesWorktops, hob, sink, fronts with fingerprints
Floors10 minutesVacuum everywhere, then mop kitchen and bathroom

The times are a guide for a typical apartment, not a rule. Adapt them to your rooms, but keep the order.

4. Use a timer and "good enough" standards

A kitchen timer or your phone keeps each zone honest. When the alarm goes, move on – even if you would like to keep going. You can note tricky spots on a list for your next thorough session.

Decide in advance what "clean" means for a quick clean – this is how you stop perfectionism from eating your hour:

  • Surfaces are free of crumbs, dust and sticky spots.
  • Taps and mirrors show no water marks.
  • The toilet is clean inside and out, including the seat and flush button.
  • Floors are vacuumed and the wet areas are mopped.

Everything beyond that – skirting boards, inside cupboards, windows – is a separate job. A written cleaning schedule helps you spread those tasks over the month.

5. Finish with the floor and a final walk-through

Vacuum the whole apartment in one go, again from the back towards the front door. Only then mop the kitchen and bathroom with lukewarm water and a little cleaner. Do not soak the floor – a well-wrung mop dries faster, and you avoid slipping. The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention also recommends non-slip shoes and a calm pace when cleaning.

Finish with a two-minute walk-through: close the windows, empty the caddy, hang the cloths up to dry and take the rubbish out. A fresh-smelling apartment with empty bins feels cleaner than one where the waste bag still stands by the door.

Your 60-minute quick-clean routine

Common mistakes when you want to clean quickly

  • Starting with the floor: Every crumb you wipe off a table afterwards lands on the clean floor again.
  • Too much product: Excess cleaner leaves streaks and sticky residue that attracts dirt. A small amount is enough.
  • One cloth for everything: Spreads dirt and germs instead of removing them.
  • Mixing cleaners to "boost" them: Never combine products, especially bleach and acidic descalers. In an emergency, Tox Info Suisse can be reached on 145.
  • Tidying and cleaning at the same time: Declutter first, then clean – otherwise you lift every object twice.
  • Standing on chairs to dust high shelves: Use a stable step ladder instead.

Frequently asked questions

How can I clean my apartment fast before guests arrive?

Focus on what guests see and use: air the apartment, clear clutter into a basket, clean the guest toilet and washbasin, wipe kitchen worktops and the dining table, and vacuum the main rooms. Close doors to rooms you have not tackled.

What order should I clean my apartment in?

Work from top to bottom within each room and from the room furthest from the entrance towards the front door. Pre-soak bathroom and kitchen surfaces first and finish with the floors.

How long does it take to clean a 3.5-room apartment?

A quick maintenance clean of an apartment that is cleaned regularly can often be done in about an hour. If it has been a while, or if you include windows, the oven or inside cupboards, plan considerably more time or split the work.

Is it better to clean a little every day or everything at once?

Both work. Short daily habits such as wiping the bathroom after use keep the weekly clean fast, while one focused hour per week is realistic for many working households. The important thing is a fixed routine.
